Amsterdam University Press (AUP) is a leading publisher of academic books in English, journals and textbooks in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and non-fiction books for the Dutch general market. We strive to stimulate societal debate, forming a global source of inspiration and knowledge.
The key aim of AUP is to make information on current research and on socially relevant matters available to scholars, innovators, and the general public. Established in 1992 and owned by the University of Amsterdam, AUP achieves this with a paper and e-format publishing programme of high-quality, peer-reviewed academic books in English, alongside a best-selling, non-fiction popular science trade list for the Dutch general audience. AUP runs an additional publishing programme of textbooks for universities and higher education, journals and major reference works.
We connect authors with readers through an international network of distributors and partners, and offer sales and marketing with dedicated representatives in key markets across the world. Our authors working on cutting-edge research are from a global academic network, distinguishing our open, creative, and internationally orientated attitude in acquisitions, sales and marketing.
AUP's goal is to spread academic knowledge swiftly and effectively, in both the general and the academic markets. In addition, quality of content and a focus on the customer play key roles. AUP has more than twenty years of experience in providing customers with high-quality scholarly publications. AUP’s academic programme specialises in the humanities and social sciences, with established and growing lists in Asian Studies, Film, Media and Communication, History, Language and Linguistics, and Social and Political Sciences. In 2017 over 100 academic titles were published, constituting of both monographs and edited collections. This prolific output is a result of engaging with international academic communities of scholars and readers; with commissioning editors based in both Europe and the US, dedicated series editors in institutions across the world, and an international marketing strategy, AUP’s reach is truly global.
